San Carlos wins 2nd most livable city in the world 2011 in international awards for liveable communities

San Carlos City won second in the Whole City Awards, Category C (75,001-150,000 population), and the Special Whole City Award and Special Award in the Individual Criteria Awards in the UN-backed 2011 International Awards for Liveable Communities held October 27-31, 2011 at Songpa, Seoul, South Korea.

City Mayor Gerardo P. Valmayor, Jr. made the power point presentation for San Carlos City showing the city’s various aspects of development and future programs based on the criteria : enhancement of the natural and built landscapes ; arts, culture and heritage; environmental best practices; community participation and  empowerment; healthy lifestyle; and strategic planning. According to Environmental Management Specialist Arthur Batomalaque, San Carlos City was recommended by the League of Cities of the Philippines to participate in the LivCom Awards. San Carlos City competed in the Whole City Awards, Category C with Carmel, Indiana, USA; Namwon City, South Korea (third); North Charleston, South Carolina, USA; Sangju City, Korea; Tongyeong City, Korea (first); Yang Peong-Gun, Korea; Rosario, Batangas; and Santiago City, Isabela. San Carlos City has a population of more than 133,000 as of 2010.

The LivCom Awards is endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme and is the world’s only competition for local communities that focuses on environmental management and the creation of liveable communities.
